In May 2002, the Kansas City Design Center awarded its first resident design fellowship to Alex S. MacLean, principal and founder of Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Landslides Aerial Photography. The images exhibited in Toward the Horizon were selected from over 3,000 photographs of Kansas City and environs that MacLean created over a period of six months and nearly 100 hours of flight.

MacLean’s photographs of Kansas City examine metropolitan growth patterns, environmental and ecological issues, and the relationships between the region’s built and natural environments. His work provides a powerful perspective on urban and landscape design and processes of regional growth and change, and will have a significant impact on public dialogues about the future growth of our metropolitan community.
