Description
A team of eleven KU students has developed architectural designs for the redevelopment of Clopper Field, an aging community park in the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. The studio project was undertaken at the request of community leaders and recreation groups with a stake in the future of the park. Working under the direction of Associate Professor Shannon Criss from the KU School of Architecture and Urban Design, the fourth-year architecture students have spent six weeks studying the park and its surrounding neighborhood. Students have also consulted public officials, community leaders, and neighborhood residents to determine which community needs might be better served by revitalization of the park. Based on their research, the students have prepared three design concepts to improve accessibility and safety, provide new recreational features, and strengthen connections between Clopper Field and the Argentine neighborhood. The design proposals will help the community determine how the park can again become a vital public space for local events and programs.
Speakers
The students will present and discuss their proposals at an open community forum at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, October 15, at the Argentine Community Center, 2810 Metropolitan Ave., Kansas City, Kan. The designs will be exhibited at the Argentine Branch Library, 2800 Metropolitan, and the Silver City Days celebration in Emerson Park on Saturday, October 26. Materials will also be available online from the Kansas City Design Center’s website, www.kcdesigncenter.org .
