David Lake
critical regionalism and making place

Sustaining a Sense of Region:
Civic Dialogues on Ecology, Urbanism, and Metropolitan Growth.

Thursday, February 7, 2002 -- 5:00 p.m.
H & R Block City Stage Theater -- Union Station

The Kansas City Design Center welcomes David Lake, founding partner and principal of San Antonio-based Lake | Flato architects, for an insightful presentation on "critical regionalism," the idea of marrying native construction materials and indigenous styles and techniques to shape a coherent regional architecture and identity.

Known throughout the United States as one of the Southwest's leading architecture firms, Lake | Flato has garnered national accolades and attention. Established in 1984, the firm designs practical buildings whose ingenuity and craftsmanship merge tradition with new technologies to evoke a modern vernacular. Their work adapts commonplace materials and time-honored construction methods to create elegantly crafted, well-sited structures that recognize the need for comfort and a strong connection to nature. From ranch houses to banks, museums to schools, Lake | Flato's designs respond to the environment through an understanding of regional materials, climate, and architectural and cultural history. The firm's 50-plus design awards include the American Institute of Architects Honor Award in 1992 and 1997.

We invite you to join us for an engaging evening presentation at Union Station's City Stage Theater, 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri. The lecture begins promptly at 5:00 p.m., and will be followed by a moderated discussion among civic leaders, design professionals, and the Kansas City community.

This event is free and open to the public.

Three hours free parking is available at Union Station. Enter on Pershing Road, one block east of the Broadway viaduct. (Refer to the Science City map for directions.)
