The Kansas City Design Center is pleased to announce the next lecture in our series,
Re-imagining the Public Realm, featuring Lee Bey, director of media and governmental affairs for Chicago-based SOM Architects.
Although not trained as an architect, Lee Bey has been one of the most influential voices shaping Chicago’s built environment. From 2001 to 2004, Bey served as the deputy chief of staff for planning and design for Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. In that role, he helped shape local policy on urban development, lakefront protection, park construction, sustainable design and architectural preservation.
Bey was also a key adviser to Mayor Daley on a number of major projects, including the redesign of Soldier Field and the planned Joffrey Ballet Co. headquarters in downtown Chicago. He also negotiated the creation of a green roof atop the new $700 million expansion of Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center.
Before joining the mayor’s office in 2001, Bey was an award-winning architecture critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. He is now director of media and governmental affairs at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the world’s largest architectural firms.
