Spring 2026 | the crossroads and west side

The South Segment connects three distinct and vibrant cultural neighborhoods: the Crossroads, the Westside, and 18th & Vine. It aims to integrate art and design that reflects the character of each neighborhood while reconnecting areas divided by highway infrastructure. The segment also offers an opportunity to bring more pedestrian and bicycle activity to the area while reducing conflicts with vehicular traffic.

The South Segment was originally studied within the existing railroad right-of-way. When negotiations stalled, students analyzed alternative alignments and identified Southwest Boulevard and 19th Street as the preferred route. The Crossroads Community Improvement District (CID) endorsed this alignment for its stronger connections to local businesses and destinations. The study also considered connections to the proposed 18th Street Streetcar extension.

From 18th & Vine, riders would travel west along 19th Street, using protected bike lanes past restaurants and businesses in the heart of the Crossroads. The route then transitions onto Southwest Boulevard and through the Westside before connecting to Allen Avenue and descending toward the West Bottoms. Together, these connections link residents, businesses, cultural destinations, and public spaces across several of Kansas City’s most distinct neighborhoods.
