Kessler Park Water Reservoir Vision Study

2021-22 | KCDC Studio Publication

After completing a preliminary visioning study on Kessler Park and the water reservoir in 2015 that generated substantive research on the existing structure of the reservoir and proposed two design alternatives, the neighborhood approached KCDC to conduct the next phase of design development studies in 2019.

This vision study, which is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Arts program and KCMO Parks & Recreation department, capitalized on the studio’s previous work and engages the community to determine the collective vision for pursuing the execution of the project. The purpose of the project is to create an implementable design vision for the utilization of the unique open space created by the abandonment of the original function of the water reservoir— transforming it into an active public space that would provide a badly needed amenity for the adjacent neighborhoods.

This publication presents the research and analysis that led to three different design scheme proposals, each with varying degrees of intervention of the existing structure and options for programming and design details. The vision presented in this study documents a collaboration between the studio and the northeast community and acts as a basis to empower and enable the neighborhoods collective efforts to transform the space.
